Perennials are our most faithful garden
friends and the backbone of most borders. Year after year, they return to
fill gardens with lovely flowers and a variety of foliage textures and
shades of green. They give a garden a sense of permanence and continuity,
filling their allotted areas with little fuss or bother for the gardener.
The heights and widths of the taller perennials, such as the peony, hosta,
and veronica, give vertical dimension and mass against which
interplantings of annuals and bedding plants display their colorful
blooms. Perennials are more expensive than annuals, but when the costs is
spread out over their years of service, they are actually bargains.
Color abounds in the mixed annual-perennial garden along the
stone path to the right. Large blocks of the same kind of plants, often a
dozen or more, make bold, interlocking masses of color. Included here are
sweet williams, calendulas, pinks, yellow and white violas, and coralbells.
